Ba Ria - Vung Tau has the advantage of deep water ports, vessels crossing ports do not need to transit, but go straight to Europe, America instead, with better service quality, can compete with the ports in the region.
A good news for investors on the Cai Mep - Thi Vai port system is
that the Ministry of Transport allowed some foreign carriers transporting
exports from Hai Phong, Quy Nhon, Da Nang to convey via mother ships on the Cai
Mep - Thi Vai port system. This has created a supply of goods from the North,
Central to Cai Mep - Thi Vai which for years, it was transshipped at the
transshipment ports in the world such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia ... The
purpose of this action is to support the Cai Mep - Thi Vai port cluster to
fully play the role of the gateway port, transit port for Vietnam. Port
investors hope, from Quarter III / 2013 onwards, carriers can transport goods
from the North, Central to transit in Cai Mep - Thi Vai area.
Despite the advantages of deepwater ports, time of freight between
Vietnam and other countries is shortened; vessels can go directly to Europe,
America faster with better service quality and more cost effectiveness; but in
recent years, the supply of goods shipped through the Cai Mep - Thi Vai port
system has not reached the predicted figures, even many ports invested in
modern technology with a total investment of hundreds of millions of dollars
have been in the state of "suspended cranes". Another paradox is that
Cai Mep - Thi Vai International Port is the Vietnam’s international hub of
ports; However, more than two years in operation, a large quantity of goods
exported to Europe, the United States remains transshipment through
international ports but not landing Cai Mep - Thi Vai port. Port investors
believed that some exporters, because of habit, did not want to change a new
mode of transport, despite having seen the advantages that direct trips to
Europe, the United States brought to.
Meanwhile, in fact, Cambodia"s exports transited to Cai Mep -
Thi Vai port instead of transshipment in Singapore. Every week, Cai Mep
International Terminal (CMIT) receives a large volume of transited goods to
Cambodia’s customers. According to seaport experts, for productivity and
geographical location, the distance from the main transport, Cai Mep - Thi Vai
port totally can be an international transshipment port. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky,
Deputy General Director of CMIT said, "To build the Cai Mep - Thi Vai
gateway and international transit ports successfully, it needs to have the
cooperative efforts of port enterprises, carriers and Government. In
particular, importers and exporters should assess the fact, thereby, adjust and
shift their logistic chain to take full advantage of the cost-effectiveness of
the gateway export port for the Southern key economic zone".
