PORTS, terminal facilities and shipping lines, which do not comply with the ISPS Code regulations by 1 July, 2004, face serious consequences, according to Port Maritime Security International Ltd (PMSi). Peter Southwood, Technical Director of PMSi said: "There are only 275 days left for thousands of shipping lines, terminals and ports around the world to put their people through certified training - and they can't all leave it until the last minute."
PMSi is a subsidiary of Eurotunnel plc, established to provide security services for the port, maritime, rail and logistics industries and has been certified by DNV (Det Norske Veritas) and the MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency) to offer courses for companies seeking to become ISPS Code compliant.
Mr Southwood added: "Companies involved in international business are finally starting to realise that it is a mandatory requirement to be compliant with the ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) Code by July 2004. We believe that many links in the supply chain - from major international exporters and blue chip companies to freight forwarders and port authorities - will begin to demand that their partners or suppliers are ISPS Code compliant, for insurance reasons if nothing else."
