A cooperative operating model between two adjacent deep-water terminals, creating a 1,200-meter interconnected berth in Cai Mep – Thi Vai

Ho Chi Minh City, October 9, 2026 – Cai Mep International Terminal Co., Ltd. (CMIT) and Tan Cang – Cai Mep Thi Vai Terminal (TCTT) officially announced the commencement of commercial operations at the CMIT – TCTT Joint Berth, marking a new stage in cooperation between the two adjacent deep-water terminals in the Cai Mep – Thi Vai area.

The event follows more than two years of step-by-step collaboration between the two sides. Since the opening of the internal connecting gate and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation on May 24, 2024, CMIT and TCTT have jointly studied and refined plans for infrastructure connectivity, operational organization, equipment and manpower deployment, safety, and maritime coordination, progressively turning the Joint Berth model from concept into practice.

CMIT and TCTT are two of the largest deep-water container terminals in the Cai Mep – Thi Vai area, capable of receiving and handling major international shipping services. Their adjacency offers distinct advantages: comparable quay elevations, aligned quay edges, and ship-to-shore crane rail systems that can be connected.
Under the operating plan, the Joint Berth enables the two terminals to handle three large mother vessels simultaneously, compared with a maximum of two previously. It is also expected to increase operating capacity by approximately 30-40%, equivalent to roughly 400,000-500,000 TEU per year for each terminal, creating additional capacity of nearly 900,000 TEU per year across the two-terminal system.
FROM INFRASTRUCTURE CONNECTIVITY TO RESOURCE INTEGRATION
As container fleets grow larger, international service networks are continually adjusted and demands for productivity and vessel turnaround time continue to rise, the CMIT – TCTT Joint Berth was developed to improve operational flexibility and make more efficient use of existing resources.
Connecting the berth gives the two terminals greater scope to coordinate vessel planning and the allocation of berths, equipment, and manpower, particularly when vessel schedules change. It also strengthens their ability to serve large-size, high-capacity container vessels, better meeting the requirements of international shipping services.
The realization of this model reflects the consensus of the leadership and shareholders of Vietnam Maritime Corporation, Saigon Port, and APM Terminals, as well as the leadership of Saigon Newport Corporation. The project also benefited from the guidance, support, and facilitation of State management agencies, competent authorities, and local government, which contributed to bringing the Joint Berth plan into operation.

OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS AT THE JOINT BERTH
At today’s ceremony, representatives of the Ho Chi Minh City leadership, State management agencies, Vietnam Maritime Corporation, Saigon Port, APM Terminals, and Saigon Newport Corporation, together with CMIT and TCTT, performed the ceremonial announcement of the Joint Berth’s official commercial operations.

A highlight of the event was the presence of the AIN SNAN EXPRESS, a Hapag-Lloyd vessel currently operating at the CMIT – TCTT Joint Berth. Immediately after the announcement, the ship-to-shore cranes of both terminals simultaneously began lifting import and export containers, marking the moment the Joint Berth formally entered the commercial operating phase.

On this occasion, representatives of CMIT and TCTT also presented commemorative gifts to the vessel’s captain, the ship’s representatives, and Hapag-Lloyd.
COLLABORATING TO STRENGTHEN CAI MEP – THI VAI’S CAPACITY
The CMIT – TCTT Joint Berth is more than a link between two adjacent berth areas. It is an integration of infrastructure, resources, and operating methods between two port operators. The model aims to make better use of existing resources, improve service quality, and strengthen adaptability to the evolving needs of shipping lines and customers.
As the Joint Berth enters commercial operation, CMIT and TCTT will continue to prioritize maritime safety, occupational safety, and service quality, while stepping up operational coordination, technology application, and process optimization. Both parties expect the Joint Berth to continue delivering results, enhancing the competitiveness of the Cai Mep – Thi Vai deep-water port cluster and contributing to the development of Vietnam’s seaport and logistics system.

CMIT – TCTT: Coordinate resources. Connecting infrastructure. Elevating Cai Mep – Thi Vai’s operating capacity.
